Embracing the Second Wind: Lessons from My Journey
Finding Strength in Adversity
As I approach my 82nd birthday, I often reflect on the lessons learned throughout my life. One experience stands out: my time in the army at Fort Jackson. Those early morning runs were brutal; we were often awakened before dawn to train heavily laden with field gear. I remember thinking my heart would stop, my flat feet hurt tremendously, and fatigue set in. Yet, amidst the struggle, I held on to a determination not to quit.

The Moment of Transformation
It was during one of those exhausting runs that I experienced a profound moment—a burst of energy I now recognize as a second wind. As my body cried in pain, something shifted within me. The focus on discomfort faded, replaced by the rhythm of my boots hitting the ground. I felt free, as if I could run forever. It was exhilarating and surreal; I didn’t understand then what was happening, but I understand now just how powerful the human spirit can be.

Life Lessons and Resilience
Fast forward over sixty years into my career, and I find that same resilience has served me well. Life continuously throws challenges our way, testing our limits. However, by remembering that second wind, we realize we can endure more than we ever thought possible. When faced with adversity, rather than succumbing to defeat, we must hold onto the hope that a second wind is always waiting just beyond the pain. If you keep pushing forward and never quit, I promise everything will eventually be okay.
