Finding Purpose After a Life-Changing Accident

The Impact of a Sudden Life Event

It’s extraordinary how quickly our lives can change. One moment, I was a news reporter, 20 years old and enjoying a drive for lunch in my treasured burgundy MGA British sports car, and the next, I was faced with a grim reality after colliding with a pickup truck. I still hear the words echo in my mind, “You are alright. I have a better purpose for you!” These words guided me in the aftermath of the accident as I traversed my hospital stay and the difficult road ahead.

Divine Intervention and New Beginnings

While recovering in the hospital, and knowing I had been drafted, and required to leave the following week, I or someone filed a deferment for me delaying service in the U.S. Army. Following advice from a stranger in the hospital, I joined the U.S. Army National Guard—an entity I hadn’t previously known much about. Looking back, I recognize that the accident and deferment had saved my life. It was during this tough period that I felt a profound revelation–that my life was guided by a higher power. Many of my peers, who were drafted around the same time, did not return from the Vietnam War alive.

Reflecting on Gratitude and Support

In post-recovery, I felt overwhelmed by the kindness of others during my hardships. Friends and strangers helped me, from transporting me to work to offering financial and emotional support. Regrettably, I didn’t adequately express my gratitude then, and regret it to this day.

Each day, I ask myself, am I fulfilling the purpose God has asked of me—a reminder to appreciate the gift of life and the selfless individuals who supported me during that challenging time.

I entered the National Guard as a Private and later attended Georgia Military Institute. Eventually accepting a commission as an officer with the rank of 1st Lieutenant and Unit Commander. I can attest that life has its challenges, but if we keep the faith, pray to our God, believe me, he will direct and protect our path. I know my grandmother prayed every day of my life and I saw much change come to me as a result. Prayer does work with Gratitude and Support.
